ChatGPT can help with takeoff math and scope lists, but it isn't built to produce bid quantities from drawings. Here's what a takeoff needs and a checklist for judging any AI takeoff tool.
ChatGPT can read the words on a construction plan well. It struggles with scale, dense symbols, and 100-sheet sets. Here's why, and what a plan-specific tool does differently.
A complete residential excavation takeoff example: topsoil strip, basement dig with overdig and sloped sides, footings, foundation backfill and haul-off with swell, plus common mistakes.
How to take off a landscape plan from a PDF: sod and seed SF, mulch and rock CY, plant counts from the schedule, edging LF, irrigation and hardscape, with a full worked example.
A practical walkthrough for turning PDF plans into a JobTread estimate: set up cost items, take off quantities in JobTread or with AI, convert units, and load clean budget lines.
How estimators approximate cut and fill in Bluebeam Revu with area, volume and depth, contour-area and grid workarounds, where those methods break down, and a faster way from the same PDF.
A full walkthrough of an AI takeoff on a single-family house plan: walls, rooms, doors and windows, drywall, framing, roofing, concrete and site work, with an example 2,400 SF quantity table.
A door and window takeoff is a count, a schedule check and a framing calculation. Here is how to read tags and schedules, reconcile counts, figure rough openings and headers, and review AI counts.
What AI blueprint readers actually do, from general chatbots to plan-specific tools like Foreman AI, Togal, Beam AI, Kreo, Bluebeam Max, STACK, and Handoff, with verified pricing.
How to count supply diffusers, return grilles, and registers from mechanical plans using the air device schedule, tags, and CFM checks, and which AI tools help.
A fair look at Togal.AI alternatives: Foreman AI, Beam AI, STACK, PlanSwift, Bluebeam, Kreo and Handoff, with published prices where vendors list them and who each tool fits best.
Remodelers need takeoff software that handles demo quantities, partial plans, as-builts and small jobs. Here is what to look for, a worked kitchen example, and an honest look at the options.
We compared the leading AI takeoff tools — Foreman AI, Togal.AI, Kreo, Beam AI, STACK, PlanSwift, Bluebeam, and more — on AI capability, workflow, and what they actually cost.
A disciplined takeoff sequence catches the mistakes that become change orders. Here's the full 21-step checklist we'd run on any bid — setup, measurement, cross-checks, and the final gut-checks before the number goes out.
A construction takeoff is the process of measuring and counting everything a project needs from the drawings. Here's how it works, what gets measured, manual vs digital vs AI methods, and where the money gets lost.
